Police launch manhunt following Lenasia South ATM bombing

The South African Police Services in Lenasia South, has launched a manhunt for a gang of armed suspects who blew up four automatic teller machines(ATM’S) at the Kiasha Park BP service station during the early hours of this Wednesday, November23.

It is alleged that, the gang of approximately twenty unknown armed suspects, clad in blankets and balaclavas pounced at the service station that is located along Wimbledon road, Lenasia South just before 2am.

The suspect’s were allegedly armed to the teeth with handguns as well as assault rifles when they confronted a 32 year old security guard and forced him to lie down on the ground. Some of the suspects proceeded to the ATM machines and blew up four belonging to First National Bank, Nedbank,Absa Bank as well as Capitec Bank. During the robbery, a 44 year old security officer who was seated inside a branded security company vehicle was shot at and as a result sustained a gunshot wound on the arm and was rushed to a nearby hospital in a stable condition.

“It is unknown at this stage whether there is any cash loss as a result of the bombing of the four teller machines. Four counts of ATM bombing as well as an attempted murder charge are currently being investigated. No arrests have been made at this stage and police investigations are underway,” SAID Lenasia South SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Khalipha Mvula.
