The ANC Johannesburg has officially directed Lenasia Ward 8 Councillor Godfrey Lebea, to step aside from his duties following his arrest and court appearance on charges of rape.
The councillor was arrested on October 28 for allegedly raping a 49- year-old woman at the Lenasia Civic Centre. He was released on R1 000 bail by the Protea Magistrates Court on November 3.
ANC Greater Johannesburg Regional Secretary, Sasabona Manganye, stated that the ANC Johannesburg Region has officially directed Cllr Lebea to step aside pending the finalisation of his matter by the court of law.
“Failure to voluntarily step aside within 30 days after he is charged, will lead to him being suspended until his case is resolved according to the guidelines and procedures adopted by the National Executive Committee in February 2021.”
The statement read that all ANC members are obligated to carry themselves in a manner that promotes the image of the movement.
“Any member whose conduct is wanting and not consistent with the values, principles, and discipline of the organisation, including rape, and gender-based violence, will be subjected to organisational disciplinary processes.
“The ANC believes that rape in our country is an enormous systemic challenge and endemic, that must be rooted out of our society.”
Councillor Lebea will reappear at the Protea Magistrates Court, on December 9.
