The Lenasia South SAPS has opened a case of child abandonment following the discovery of a newborn baby in an open veld beside the Golden Highway in Vlakfontein on Wednesday, February 3.
According to the Lenasia South spokesperson Sergeant Khalipha Mvula, the discovery was made by a 38-year-old man. He alleged that as he was walking through the open veld, he heard the cries of a baby and he found two plastic shopping bags lying on the ground. He saw what appeared to be the leg of a child sticking out on one of the bags. He immediately asked passers-by to assist him in checking the contents of the bags. A newborn, female baby was found inside one of the shopping bags. An ambulance and the police were alerted. Upon arrival of the ambulance, the baby was immediately taken to a local hospital for medical attention. The police are appealing to members of the public to come forward with information that will lead to the arrest of the person who abandoned the baby.
Members of the public are urged to approach the Johannesburg Child Welfare Organisation for assistance in such matters. The telephone number is 011 298 8500.
