A female cleaner (61), and a 38-year-old driving licence examiner, appeared in the Booysens Magistrates Court on charges of fraud and corruption. They were arrested on February 2, by the members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, for allegedly selling driver’s licences for R4 500 without the driver being tested by the examiner. The City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service (GFIS) department received an anonymous tip-off early this week about a cleaner who was allegedly selling driver’s licences.
Both suspects work at the Xavier Junction Licence and Testing Centre in Ormonde. GFIS officials working together with the Hawks, acted on the tip-off after a booking was made by the suspects. A sting operation resulted in the suspects’ arrest after handing over a temporary driver’s licence to an undercover member of the Hawks. The female suspect had a stack of driver’s licence cards which she alleged were ready to be collected by her clients, who had already paid the R4 500. “I would like to commend the resident who reported the matter to our team that acted swiftly to deal with the matter. I would also like to thank the Hawks for their willingness to always assist in ensuring that corruption is eradicated in the City,” said Executive Mayor, Cllr Mpho Phalatse. She added, “Corruption has no place in this administration, and we will work tirelessly, and in collaboration with institutions such as the Hawks, SAPS, and JMPD to ensure that residents of Johannesburg receive the quality services they deserve”.
The City would like to encourage people to report any fraud and corruption activities through the 24-hour tip-off hotline 0800 002 587, whistle@joburg.org.za, or visit the GFIS offices at 48 Ameshoff Street, in Braamfontein.
