On January 13, the Lenasia Magistrates court convicted Xolani Zwane (39) on a charge of shoplifting. Zwane was found guilty for an offence which he committed on Thursday, January 9 2020 at the U-SAVE supermarket, Sheffield Plaza in Lenasia South.
Lenasia South spokesperson, Sergeant Khalipha Mvula said, “On the day when the accused ran out of his luck he visited the supermarket and while doing his shopping and walking through the counters a vigilant security officer spotted the accused taking a packet of Knorrox stock cubes and tucking it inside his pants. The security officer observed his movements until the accused went past the paypoint and approached the exit door. The security officer requested to conduct a search on his person and that is when the accused was caught with the stolen item valued at R30-00.
He was then handed over to the police and as charged with shoplifting. The accused was subsequently slapped with a R1000-00 fine or a 2 months imprisonment suspended for 5 years.”
Sgt Mvula said the judiciary is hard at work, “As we were recently observing the festive season as a nation, the wheels of justice didn’t come to a grinding halt. On Wednesday, December 11, 2019 the Lenasia Magistrates court convicted Fundiswa January aged 33 years old and sentenced her to 3 years of direct imprisonment on a charge of house breaking with intent to steal. The accused allegedly broke into the victim house in Vlakfontein and stole a pair of sandals. Two days later after the incident, the victim of the crime was able to identify his pair of sandals while the accused was still wearing them. The victim then handed the accused to the police without taking the law into his own hands as he had confidence in the justice system.”
The station commander, Colonel Makgomo Maake has commended the investigating officer detective Sergeant William Modubu for securing both the convictions. She further said that these sentences will go a long way as a deterrence to those who are still contemplating to commit such crimes. In the words of the Gauteng provincial commissioner “indeed we will turn the tide against crime/Zizojika izinto.”
