Recently, Johannesburg Central Police arrested a 40-year old man for common robbery at corner Bree and Simmonds Street.

It is alleged that suspect robbed a 19-year old man off his cell phone in the above mentioned streets.

“The victim was walking with his friend when the suspect bumped into him; he apologised and the suspect came back. He grabbed the victim by his trouser and shook him, taking his cell phone in the process. After he left, the victim realized that his phone which was in his pocket was missing,” said Johannesburg Central SAPS spokesperson, Capatain Xoli Mbele.

The victim screamed for help and the community came to his rescue. The suspect was apprehended by the police and the cell phone recovered.

“We would like to sensitise the community members to be on alert about the new modus operandi being used by suspects in the Johannesburg CBD\ whereby the suspect bumps into the target, they then grab you by your trouser or belt and shake you as if they are angry at you for bumping into them. While still apologising they take your cell phone or wallet,” said Capt Mbele.
