After more than 28 months of going back and forth, the Ramla family can now rest knowing that the criminals who murdered one of their own are behind bars. Mrs Seata Ramla was shot on her way back from work on April 7, 2016. The incident occurred at corner Lancaster Street and Wimbledon Street, Lenasia South. Four weeks after the incident the perpetrators were arrested. On July 24, two suspects were found guilty on two counts of robbery and murder. Both were given 15 years for robbery and life imprisonment for murder.
Speaking to the Rising Sun, Matesh Ramla, the son of the deceased said his family believed that justice has been served and he hoped that the convicted criminals will remain behind bars for a long time. He said although justice has been served, their wounds are still fresh. He also stated that the family is not ready to forgive the duo. He further stated that even if they forgave the criminals, they would not forget.
“The wounds are too deep,” said Ramla.
He said the pair have robbed them of a person who was the heartbeat and backbone of the family. “She was a significant part of the family and her death has left a huge void,” said Ramla.
He said his mother used the same route for more than 23 years, and she was robbed twice. However, she was not assaulted.
Ramla said his mother loved her job and never missed a day of her work. She was a hairdresser and managed to befriend a lot of people. She also made a huge impact in their lives.
Ramla said his father has been affected badly and has been ill. Ever since after her death he had been in and out of hospital.
He questioned the motive of the criminals, “She was just a tiny, 63 year -old, who can be simply overpowered. However, they decided to shoot her. Constable Mbele, the CPF and all people involved did a superb job.”
He said it pains the family to know that her life was taken for a mere R150 and two cell phones.
“My mother was very humble, full of life and one can safely say she has lived her life to the fullest. She always tell us that tomorrow never comes,” added Ramla.
Ramla also urged community members who are going through what his family went through to have faith in the justice system. He also urged them to pursue justice and follow their cases. He also pleaded with community members’ to report any incident to the police, even if it’s a minor incident.
Ramla said the criminals never showed any remorse and they kept on refering to the victim as ‘an old Indian Lady’.
