A concerned resident of Lenasia warns residents to be vigilant after she was recently scammed at an ATM.
The woman, who did not want to be named, told the Rising Sun how she was scammed at an ATM at the Shell Garage in Lenasia’s Rose Avenue.

“I had just withdrawn money from the ATM and was driving away from the garage when an unknown man stopped me,” she said.

When she enquired what was the matter, the man, who she says was well dressed, told her someone had been withdrawing money from her account.

“I was shocked because I had my bank card on me, and one needs a card to withdraw cash,” she said.

She quickly went to the ATM where she was instructed by the man to insert her card and key in her pin. In a frantic state she did, completely oblivious to the fact that the man had been watching her. She says the man then slipped his hand into his pockets and took out a R100 note.

“He put the R100 note in the card slot and slipped my card in there. He then told me he put my card back into the machine, before walking off, in anger, saying I did not want to be helped” she said.

A woman who witnessed the incident told her the man had taken her card, by then the man had already sped off in a white Golf GTI without any plates.
In less than 15 minutes, R4 000 was withdrawn from her account. The money was withdrawn from an FNB ATM and a Standard Bank ATM.

“I just want to educate the public about this. There are so many scams happening around us that we don’t even know about,” she said.

The card was blocked while the perpetrator was making a third withdrawal.
