Following an assault that led him to the Lenasia Police station, Zenane Donald Nyambusa says he was assaulted by police officers who refused to assist him in laying a charge.
On Saturday, October 10, Nyambusa, after being assaulted by men known to him, made his way to the Lenasia Police Station to lay a charge.
At around 9am, he got to the police station and followed the queue in the charge office.
“When it was finally my turn, the officer who assisted me told me to get a doctors letter listing my injuries,” Nyambusa said.
He then travelled to the Lenasia South Hospital to get medical attention as well as the letter.
He returned to the police station and again followed the queue. According to Nyambusa, when he reached the front of the queue, he was told to go sleep.
“Because I refused to go sleep and wanted a charge laid, a woman officer told me I was making noise,” Nyambusa said. This according to him was brought on by the fact that he had been ‘tipsy’.
Allegedly, the woman officer, after exchanging a few words with him, walked around the counter and hit him over the head with a file she had been carrying.
“When I asked why she had hit me, another officer approached, this time a man who began slapping me on the face,” Nyambusa said. The scene unfolded in the charge office in front of other community members.
Nyambusa then asked the officers to open another charge of assault, this time against the officers, who then threw him out of the police station and locked the gates.
“I know my rights. I knew what I was there for and being ‘tipsy’ does not mean I can be treated in the way that I was,” Nyambusa said.
Captain Hector Netshivodza, spokesperson for the Lenasia SAPS, advised Nyambusa lay a charge against the officers at a different police station. He further added that an internal investigation would be carried out.
According to Nyambusa this had not been the first time the station had refused him help as they had previously refused to investigate other charges he had laid.
