Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for a suspect who shot and killed five family members in Hillbrow, in Johannesburg on Monday. The incident happened at around 8 pm on Monday at the corner of Kaptein and Claim Streets. The motive for the killings is not known.
According to reports, the suspect entered the flat and opened fire on the three women and two children.
Fikile Malembe, her daughter Luyanda, son Cherno and grandchild Mayihlome were found shot dead in their one-bedroom Madison Square flat.
Malembe had been living in the block of flats for 15 years.
It’s believed the nanny’s 12-year-old is the only one who survived the shooting.
Building manager and long-time resident Joshua Baloyi, says he phoned the police, ambulance and fire brigade but the police were last to arrive on the scene.
He said that security at the flat was non-existent as anybody could enter the building without being checked for weapons.
Residents questioned why the security guard did not see the gunman enter the building and speculated that the killer might have gained entry through a tuckshop which leads into the building. However, the tuckshop owner, Ndubuisi Sam, denied this claim.
“The child who was found at the scene has been taken to a place of safety and we are now waiting for the family, who are travelling from KwaZulu-Natal to come and take her,” Baloyi added.
Gauteng police say they are hoping to make an arrest soon.
