A 28-year-old man was arrested following his foiled attempt to steal a Toyota Quantum at Zakariyya Park on the evening of Thursday, January 12.
According to the 35-year-old victim, at about 7pm he went to the Zakaria Park Engen Garage filling station and parked his vehicle with the keys in the ignition and went inside the shop.

“A short while later he was surprised to see someone trying to drive away in his vehicle. He immediately rushed outside and managed to remove the car keys from the ignition,” said Sergeant Khalipa Mvula of the Lenasia South SAPS.
The suspect, seeing that his plan was foiled, fled towards nearby houses. A small group of community members conducted a search and the suspect fled back to the garage. He hid himself inside the garage shop as he feared the group was going to take matters into their own hands and assault him. It is further alleged that the suspect also damaged a cash register while threatening the garage personnel, ordering them not to open up the main entrance.
Two officers on duty were flagged down and alerted to the scene.
