Criminals have invented a new way of defrauding community members of their hard earned money.

They are now targeting people who withdraw large sums of money from a bank or an ATM.

A few incidences of such a nature have been reported the Johannesburg Central Police Station.

Johannesburg Central Police spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, said suspects are mostly females working with males.

Captain Mbele elaborated,   “Suspects operate in this way; one of them will walk in front of the victim and throw a bundle of money on the floor, one of their accomplices will pick it up in front of the victim. The suspect will then tell the intended victim they will share the money because both of them have seen it”.

However, inside the bundle are papers with just one real note.

“(The) Suspects will take the victim to a secluded place where he/she will be joined by his/her accomplices. The victim will be assaulted and robbed of their money,” he added.

Captain Mbele offered the following tips to the community:

• Change direction if a suspect picks up money in front of you, you may be a target.
• Do not follow the person who is telling you to accompany him or her to share the money.
• Inform the police or the security guards.
• If they are following you, scream for assistance.
