AFTER two policemen were brutally murdered on Wednesday, September 9, at Dobsonville, Soweto, a rifle used by the eight criminals was recovered by police in Lawley Informal Settlement.

The brazen murder made national headlines amid police killings that are happening around the country.

According to Lenasia SAPS spokesperson, Captain Hector Netshivhodza, the rifle was used in the killing of both officers.

A suspect was traced and arrested in Kwa Zulu-Natal. The suspect, after being arrested, further disclosed where the other weapon was hidden.

The officers died after a car chase. The police vehicle collided head-on with a white Mercedes Benz. After the crash, the accused shot at the police.

They fled the scene with police guns and dockets. The motive for the killing is still unknown.

One officer died at the scene and the second officer died later at Milpark Hospital, Johannesburg.

According to Captain Netshivhodza both officers were attached to the Moroka Cluster (Family, child, protection, sexual offences unit and Hawks.)

Hawks found more evidence and tracked down other suspects. They found five of the eight suspects; three are in custody and two died in a shootout.

According to a report, Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane addressed journalists on the progress made against police killings in the province.

“Most of the suspected killers were behind bars,” she said.

She added that eight police officers had been killed while on duty in the past three months alone.
