A 36-year-old Metro Police officer was shot in the head during a shootout along the Golden Highway, next to Vlakfontein, on Monday, April 18.
According to JMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minaar, the police had stopped a speeding Volvo with six occupants.
Police discovered that the occupants in the vehicle were armed.
“One officer ran back to the state vehicle and grabbed his firearm which was between the seats,” said Minaar.
The suspects drove off with the officers hot on their heels. Whilst being pursued by the officers a shootout ensued leaving the officer wounded.
According to ER24’s spokesperson, Werner Vermaak, “ER24 were called to the scene where they found a heavy presence of police and metro police on scene. They found the officer with an apparent gunshot wound to his head.”
“The officer was airlifted to the Milpark Hospital in Parktown by a SAPS helicopter,” said Shuabe Ebrahim of Pulsate ambulance services.
Three suspects have been arrested and two fire arms were seized. Three suspects are still at large.
