Lenasia South SAPS is investigating three separate murder incidents committed between Friday, July 30, 2021, and Monday, August 2, 2021. All three incidents had a common element – gun violence. It is believed this is due to the proliferation of unlicensed firearms in the hands of criminals. In the first incident, it is alleged that the victim driving his black BMW 1 series, stopped near Jomo’s tavern to chat to a known female when a man emerged from nowhere and fired a single shot at the victim before disappearing in the dark. The victim was taken to Lenasia South Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the back of his ear.
” Sgt Mvula said the second incident occurred at 21:00 on Sunday, August 1, 2021. A 24-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded in an open veld in Vlakfontein Extension 3. According to the police report, the deceased was in the company of his neighbour walking from Vlakfontein heading to Phumla Mqashi after watching soccer in Vlakfontein Extension 3, when they were confronted by an unknown number of perpetrators who robbed them of their handsets.
The suspects fired several gunshots that fatally wounded the 24-year-old victim. In the latest incident at 20:30, on Monday, August 2, 2021, a 35-year-old man was shot in Vlakfontein Proper. It is alleged that the deceased, who is the owner of Zolani Mawethu Funeral Services, was in the company of one of his employees in his white Toyota Fortuner at the main gate of his offices when three unknown men emerged and demanded the keys to his vehicle, before opening fire on them. Three separate murder cases have been opened for police investigations. No arrests have been effected at this stage, said Sgt Mvula.
Members of the public are encouraged to report individuals with unlicensed firearms, and those behind these murders, to save people’s lives and to bring the perpetrators to book. Information regarding individuals who possess unlicensed firearms can be shared with the acting station commander of Lenasia South police station SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Malan, on 079 525 1460.
