The Provincial Commissioner of police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has ordered an urgent probe into an illegal high-calibre firearm that was found on Wednesday afternoon, March 17, 2021, in the possession of two students in Braamfontein. Police have for the past week been on high alert monitoring protests by students of various tertiary institutions in Gauteng Province, particularly in Johannesburg. A Crime Intelligence report about a dangerous weapon was operationalised and led police to a gathering in Braamfontein where students were in attendance. It is at this gathering where members observed two students in Stiemens Street carrying an automatic rifle. The officers kept a close watch and saw the pair drive off in a vehicle. The car was followed and ultimately stopped by the Johannesburg Flying Squad and the Tactical Response Team in Auckland Park. Police searched and found a Galil, an Israeli-make automatic rifle with a loaded magazine in the vehicle.

A 24-year-old male suspect and a 21-year-old female suspect were arrested immediately and will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court in due course on charges of possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition; and possession of a dangerous weapon. “It goes to prove the magnitude of the problem police are facing in terms of the proliferation of illegal firearms. That this could be in the arms of a student is worrisome, notwithstanding the question why a firearm of this calibre was brought to a gathering of students in the first place,” cited the Provincial Commissioner.

I did not kill the mother of my child-Simphiwe

Simphiwe Mokoena (24) is supposed to be mourning the death of the mother of his child. However, he is unable to do so in peace. Simphiwe alleged that his life is now in danger because the family of the deceased is accusing him of murdering her. He said that his relationship with the deacesed was cordial for the sake of the child.

The deceased would come to Simphiwe’s home to visit the child and sometimes sleep over in separate room. He said that on March 13, the deceased had arrived at his home drunk. He let her in and later he was awoken by his sister informing him that the mother of his child had drunk poison. Frustrated and scared, Simphiwe said that he had tried to contact the deceased’s mother, with no response. He had  then rushed to her house to inform her of the incident. The deceased’s mother had then taken the deceased to hospital.

Simphiwe said that after few hours, the deceased’s brothers had come to his home accusing him of killing their sister. At that point he did not know what to do or think. He had to go into hiding as the brothers wanted to hurt him. Although his family explained to them that she had committed suicide, none of them was willing to believe this. She had left a suicide note and nowhere in the letter had she accused him of anything. Her family thought that the note was a fake.

Simphiwe has since taken out a protection order against the deceased’s family.  “My life is at risk. We reside in the same street and this makes it difficult for me to carry on with my life. There are rumours that there are people who want to kill me and some of my neighbours treat me differently. All I need is peace. I do not want my child to grow up thinking that I am the one who killed his mother. I do not have access to my child and it is destroying me. I need the members of the community to know that I did not kill the mother of my child. I also want them to know that she did not die on my property.”
