Man shot in face during Lenasia Hijacking
By Neo Sekati
Following what seems to have been panic, hijackers opened fire on a motorist who had parked behind their get-away car during a hijacking. The incident unfolded in Lenasia Extension 5’s Robyn Street.
On Tuesday, September 1 around 7.30pm, Maqsood Khan was pulling out of his driveway when a KIA, driving down the road, suddenly pulled up behind him. Five men armed with ‘AK47s’ approached him, opened the door and pulled him out of the vehicle. A gun was put to his head and he was ordered to produce money and the vehicle’s keys.
“They searched me and found a bank cheque I had to give to the Sheriff, my wallet with my bank cards and money, and the car keys. I told them that was all I had,” Khan said. Another vehicle then came down the road and stopped behind the hijacker’s vehicle.
“My BMW was half on the road and half on the driveway and the suspect’s vehicle was behind mine, so the other vehicle could not pass through,” Khan explained. “When the suspects noticed the newcomer, they opened fire on it”. According to Khan, who was ordered to keep his eyes closed, heard the hail of gunshots going off.
It is said that the newcomer, probably in a state of panic, pressed the accelerator causing his car to slam into the suspects Kia. As the shots were still being fired, he reversed and crashed into a wall which was about four houses away.
The suspects then fled the scene with both their vehicle and Khan’s BMW.
The man, who had sustained a bullet wound to the face, was treated on scene by Pulsate and Saaberie Chishty emergency services and was then transported to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
Following a quick response by Tracker, the vehicle was recovered a few hours after the incident at the Morafe Hostel in Soweto.
