Ethiopian nationals rescued in Zakariyya Park

On October 14, the Johannesburg Central police acting upon information, went to a house in Zakariyya Park, where they rescued 50 Ethiopian nationals aged between 12 and 50, held against their will.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said, “A 49-year-old suspect has been arrested for kidnapping. It is reported that these 50 people, were brought into South Africa to be reunited with their families living in the country, but on arrival, the person who transported them demanded money from their families before their release. They are currently waiting to be processed by the Department of Home Affairs. Some of their families have been notified. The suspect will be appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday.”
