Recently, City employees working at the Protea South Clinic, were held hostage by local residents. The residents were demanding service delivery. The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development, Cllr Dr Mpho Phalatse, condemned the incident.
Cllr Dr Phalatse said that the incident was devastating. “It is reported that the staff members remained in the facility after 16h00 as they were waiting for an ambulance to transfer a patient to a nearby hospital. They could not attend to any new patients as it was already past the official closing time. It is alleged that two patients arrived at 16h10, demanding to be served. The staff offered the patients the option of being referred to Chiawelo CHC , or to return the following day. This request was declined, and the six staff members were held hostage in the facility by the two patients.“

Cllr Dr Phalatse said , “At about 16h30, the six staff members reported the matter to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department. While waiting for the ambulance and the police to arrive, they decided to attend to the two patients. I wish to place it on record that the City of Johannesburg condemns these criminal acts and that our JMPD, working with other law enforcement agencies, will take decisive action to address this matter and to hold those responsible to account. This will help prevent the possibility of violence being directed at City employees who work directly with residents. To this end, I have demanded that a thorough investigation be conducted as this behaviour will not be tolerated.”
