42-year-old Tommy Vincent Ngoveni was convicted of murdering his girlfriend Lorain Vuma by setting her shack alight, in Vlakfontein five years ago.
He was also convicted on two counts for the attempted murder of his and Lorain Vuma’s two-year-old child and of Vuma’s sister, for which he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each. He was also convicted of setting the shack alight and sentenced to 10 years for arson. The cases were heard at the Palm Ridge High Court on August 26, where Ngoveni pleaded guilty to all charges.
On December 8, 2010, Ngoveni bought five litres of petrol and headed to Vuma’s shack. He poured the gasoline under Vuma’s door and set it alight. He then went to Limpopo where he was later traced and arrested.
Vumas neighbour, Mr Makhubela, who saw the shack on fire managed to get the two year old and Vuma’s sister out from the blaze. Vuma, sadly, was dead. After thorough interrogation, Ngoveni admitted that he had set the shack alight, killing his girlfriend.
The police would like to thanks all the witnesses who were brave enough and came forward with information about the history of violence of the accused which assisted the police to link the suspect with the murder case.
