The Hassen family speaks out after the gruesome murder of Roland Hassen, also known as Manakies.

On Friday, August 21, Manakies (52) was gunned down on Poplar Street in what is said to be a revenge killing.

According to the Lenasia SAPS, the deceased was getting out of the passenger seat of a vehicle when occupants of a red Toyota Corolla approached and fired, without warning, at the deceased.

“Roland was accused of stabbing of a man, last September, at the Lenasia police station. The case was provincially discharged,” said Fatima Odendaal, a close family member.

According to Odendaal, after the stabbing at the police station the family received death threats and was constantly terrorised.

“Prior to the shooting we even went to the police station and asked for police vehicles to patrol the area, however that was not done,” Odendaal mentioned.

It is said Manakies had a gun put to his face numerous times, and had to jump into people’s yard in order to escape being shot. Manakies did not take the matter into to his own hands or retaliate as he wanted to let justice take its course.

Last year December, after the stabbing at the police station, his brother, Anthony Hassen, was shot dead at a local park in front of his four-year-old daughter.

According to a source, Manakies’ killers are said to be hit-men, hired by the same people who are also responsible for his brother’s shooting.

A source indicated there is a feud between the Hassen family and another family in the area. The ‘other’ family has been accused of drug dealing.

“People from all corners have come to pay their respects and some have also contributed towards assisting with the funeral. That gives a person an idea of the type of person Manakies was,” said a family member, who did not want to be named.

“Still after his death, the family have received death threats.

“We know who the perpetrators are and, well, nothing has been done.  Lenasia is being held hostage and residents need to stand together against the drug lords and drug dealers so we can be safe,” said Odendaal.

Manakies is survived by his wife and children. His funeral was on Saturday, August 29.
