On October 15, Zimbabwean nationals, Tonderai Kamhuka (32), and Brian Mlambo (34), were sentenced at the Heidelberg Regional Court to 15 years imprisonment for hijacking a truck. They were also declared unfit to possess firearms.
On May 2 at around 11pm, the accused hijacked a truck with a container full of Apollo brand tyres worth R400 00 at Shalimar Ridge Four Ways Stop in Heidelberg.
The driver of the truck had been en route to Boksburg from Durban when a white Toyota Corolla blocked his way. Two passengers alighted and held him up with firearms.
The duo pulled him out of the truck and assaulted him before taking off in the truck. A passerby who witnessed the incident alerted the police.
Swift response by the police led to the arrest of the suspects in the Overkruin area in Heidelberg. Their accomplices in the Toyota Corolla managed to flee the scene.
“We would like to thank members of the community for being our eyes and ears in the fight against crime. Good conviction is the result of diligent work being done by the investigating officer. This should send a strong message to the community that crime does not pay, that the weed of crime bears bitter fruits. We shall continue to do our best to ensure that those who commit acts of crime are put away for a long time,” said Johannesburg Central SAPS spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele.
