Following numerous rock throwing incidents along the N12 Freeway, the JMPD has decided to go undercover in an attempt to curb the crime.

According to JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar, the operation will be led by undercover officers and would begin immediately.

This follows reports of violent incidents along the N12 freeway between Lenasia and the N1 freeway.

While many have fallen victim to the robberies and assaults owing to the rock throwing incidents between Lenasia and the N1, some have crashed their cars. In one of the latest incidents, one person lost his life when he crashed his car after it being hit by a rock.

Armed criminals pounce on their victims after throwing rocks from a bridge, causing vehicles to stop, or cars are forced to stop when drivers come across the rocks on the road.

The attacks happen mainly at night.

“The incidents have been taking place for months now. Following a number of reports we have received, we then decided to have undercover officers patrolling the area,” said Minnaar.

He added that the officers would be patrolling in unmarked vehicles to prevent them from being identified by the criminals.
