Miriam Kortdom (55) moved from Northern Cape to Vrededorp in 2004. She stayed there until her husband died recently. Mrs Kortdom was living at 27 C in 11th Street. However, since the death of her husband, she has been compelled to move out of the unit to allow others to occupy. However, due to her health status she couldn’t move.
The City officials, who govern the old age homes in the area, have been visiting her constantly, telling her to move out.
Because of fear, she was no longer spending much of her time in the house; she kept on loitering around the streets, sometimes going out to visit her friends.

On Tuesday her body was found; she had a broken arm, neck and blue marks. The family is adamant that there is more to her death.
Speaking to the Rising Sun, divested Sophia Ramabolu, a family member, said the family is heartbroken.
“She died running away from the government officials who were harassing her day in day out. She would wake up at 4 am and come back at 11 pm just to make sure that the officials don’t find her in the house. While the body was still in the house one of the officials was already outside the house. She was ready to put someone in the house. We understand that she was not supposed to be here, but her husband was living here, there was no way that she can just pack and leave after her husband’s death. We are broken as family”.
Ramabolu said some community members are coming every day to claim some of the things in the house, “Everyone is just coming and tell us that some of the furniture in the house belongs to them”.
Ramabolu added, “The body has left for Northern Cape, but her clothes and some furniture is still here. We don’t know how we going to transport them, but the sad part, we also need to go to the funeral but we don’t have any means of going there. The funeral is on Saturday, July 14. We are pleading with community members to assist us, even if someone is going that side we can be gladly go with them”.
