Three suspects, including a woman were taken into police custody on Thursday, July 5, and have been charged with murder and attempted murder.
The arrests follow after the body of a 32-year-old man was found lying in the yard where the deceased had been staying as a tenant, at the Meriting informal settlement.
According to reports, the three arrested, a mother, her 17-year-old son, as well their 28-year-old tenant, had assaulted the deceased and another tenant (29) after accusing them of stealing a pair of shoes.
The matter was brought to the attention of the 41-year-old woman landlord who went to enlist the help of a group of men who were working at a local scrapyard.
The deceased and his co-accused then allegedly had their hands and legs bound with wire, and locked up inside the shack they were renting and assaulted with knobkerries.
“The beating allegedly took hours before the lifeless body was dumped in front of the gate. The other assault victim sustained severe injuries as a result of the beating and had to be rushed to the local hospital to receive medical treatment,” said Lenasia South SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Khalipyha Mvula.
The landlord, her 17 year-old son and the 28-year-old tenant were then placed under arrest and charged with murder as well as attempted murder and are expected to appear in court soon.
