The Lenasia Extension 13 community is up in arms over the illegal occupation of land in the area.

This came after a woman (26) occupied a piece of land belonging to the provincial government at the corner of Citroen Circle and Heliodor Crescent.

The woman erected a shack at the site on the evening of Wednesday, July 4. When community members noticed the shack, they immediately sent out a complaint to the relevant departments.

The following day, the community met at the property and asked the woman why she had chosen that piece of land to erect a shack.

“The woman had no papers yet she claimed the government told her to build on that piece of land,” Ward Committee member, Zaahid said.

While community members were questioning the woman, a truck filled with building material arrived, with material to build a two- roomed house.

The JMPD arrived an hour later and the shack was demolished.

These actions prompted the community to clamp down on all illegal land occupation in the community.

The woman was followed to another property, at the corner of Galaxy Crescent, which it is alleged she also tried to occupy… this was not allowed to happen.

“We will not allow anyone to invade our community. We will make sure all illegal land occupiers are out. We don’t want a repeat of the 2013 demolitions, and this is the only way to avoid them,” said community member Gadija Marwing.
