On July 4, the Johannesburg Central Police arrested a 59-year-old man. He was arrested for impersonating police and for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The suspect was arrested at the corner of Jeppe and Eloff Street at 3pm.

Captain Xoli Mbele of Johannesburg Central SAPS explained, “Police were busy with their crime prevention duties when they saw a suspicious man. Police stopped and searched him and recovered a firearm with live ammunition. The man failed to produce the license to possess a firearm”.

Captain Mbele said the preliminary investigation revealed the owner of the fire arm.

“If the rightful owner failed to report a firearm missing or stolen within 24 hours; the owner will be charged with Section 120 subsection 11 of Firearm Control Act 60 of 2000.”

He added, “Police also recovered an appointment certificate that belongs to a police captain. Investigation continues to determine how an appointment certificate of a captain ended up in his hands. He will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court”.
