The Ennerdale community is reeling in shock and disbelief after a father ‘mistakenly’ shot his son outside an Ennerdale school on Tuesday, June 5.

The incident took place after the man had taken his son to attend an extra study lesson at the Fred Norman Secondary School.

According to police, the 14-year-old death appears to be a tragic mistake.

The police’s Mpande Khoza says a murder docket has been opened.

“The father got scared, he thought that he was being robbed or hijacked… he pulled out a firearm and shot towards the direction of the boy. And unfortunately, he hit the boy in the chest. He tried to resuscitate the boy before taking him to a hospital, but on the way, the boy passed away.”

The man claims he thought his son was a hijacker. He rushed his son to hospital and was declared dead on arrival.

The Gauteng department of education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, conveyed his condolences to the family and visited the school on Wednesday, June 6.
