Two shopkeepers from a shop in Vlakfontein Extension 1 were shot and injured during a robbery in which money, groceries, airtime and cigarettes were stolen.
Entry was gained through a hole in the shop wall after which the two suspects entered the bathroom. The two shopkeepers woke up at this juncture and realized there were intruders. According to Lenasia South SAPS communication officer, Sergeant Khalipha Mvula, the shopkeepers tried to block them from coming into the bedroom from the bathroom. The two suspects retaliated with shots, hitting the shopkeepers, one of whom sustained an injury to his back and the other to his left leg. They then looted the supermarket, taking an undisclosed amount of money, groceries, airtime and cigarettes.
“We are not sure how many shots they fired,” said Mvula. He added that the neighbours heard what was happening and believe that there were more suspects.
A case of business robbery and attempted murder has been opened. No arrests have been made but investigations are continuing. “Anyone who has more information please contact the police station,” said Sergeant Mvula.
