Drama erupted on the Golden Highway when four cars crashed during rush hour on Wednesday morning. The accident happened at the Golden Highway and R554 intersection in Lehae, south of Joburg.
It was misty with clouds showing signs of rain when the accident happened.
Eyewitnesses allege that the driver of the green VW Golf 1 failed to stop when the robot turned red, and he allegedly forced his way through to pass.

One of the eyewitnesses claimed that at that time, the Golf was heading towards north of the Golden Highway.
“The driver of Golf didn’t stop at the robot which had just turned red. The Citroen, coming from the Trade Route Mall side, crashed into the Nissan 1400 bakkie and a Toyota Corolla. The Citroen ended up spinning and overturned,” said the eyewitness.
The Rising Sun saw that the Citroen had landed on its roof and its driver had sustained minor injuries.
The driver of the Corolla, a medical nurse, was also slightly injured, but her car’s airbags had exploded after the accident.
During the commotion, the Rising Sun saw the driver of Golf got into his car and sped off in front of the police as he fled from the accident scene. Bystanders tried to chase after him, but he drove towards Eldorado Park, leaving the scene in high speed.

The driver of the bakkie got frustrated and confronted the driver of Citroen and demanded answers on why his car was hit. Police had to intervene when the situation was about to get out of hand.
Ambulances arrived at the scene to attend to the injured people.
Even tow trucks hurriedly got to the scene to clear off the road.
Three drivers of the cars refused to speak to Rising Sun at the scene.
Attempts were made to obtain comment from the Lenasia SAPS, however, attempts seemed futile.
