The Lenasia community is in shock following the rape of a 16-year-old girl in Extension 3 Poppy Street Park, on the evening of Friday, March 9.
According to police, the victim, together with her sister and a friend had been drinking alcohol in the park from the afternoon until around 7pm.
The friend left the two sisters in the park drinking and headed home. When the siblings decided to head home, the victim started vomiting and could not walk owing to the excessive intake of alcohol.

“Her sister went home to fetch their mother to help them and left the victim in the park alone,” said Lenasia SAPS spokesperson, Captain Hector Netshivhodza.
When she returned, she found her sister being raped by an unknown male. Upon realising he had been spotted, he fled the scene, leaving his cell phone behind. “The phone was handed to police and will form part of the investigation,” Netshivhodza said.
