SAPS members amongst 1 900 arrested

“Gauteng police meant business when they said they would get rid of criminal elements within its ranks. To attest to this, some police officers accused of various crimes were arrested last weekend,” said the SAPS in a statement released on February 12.

A police constable was arrested in Sandringham, Johannesburg, for attempted business robbery, misuse of state vehicle and defeating the ends of justice.

It is alleged that the constable colluded with two accomplices to rob a business in Limbro Park.

“The constable allegedly used a state vehicle to transport them. A thorough investigation by police led to the arrest of the constable and his two accomplices,” read the statement.  In a separate incident, a Khutsong constable and five others were arrested for extortion and for allegedly kidnapping a 36-year-old foreign national in Potchefstroom.

The six were arrested and the victim rescued following swift response by police.

In a third incident, a 40-year-old police constable was arrested in Protea Glen, Soweto, for corruption, extortion and fraud.

The police officer, together with his accomplice, were arrested by the Gauteng Anti-Corruption Unit for allegedly soliciting about R30 000 from people to whom they promised employment at the Johannesburg Metro Police Department.

In their efforts to reduce crime, Gauteng police have been out in the streets and arrested more than 1 900 suspects  for various crimesfrom February 9 to February 10.

Various intelligence-led operations were conducted, including roadblocks, stop and searches, shebeen raids, and searching for wanted suspects.

In Lenasia, police arrested a man believed to be the mastermind of drug trafficking.

Police received information from a reliable source, of a suspected drug dealer operating in Lenasia and the surrounds. While patrolling, police spotted the suspect driving a gold Kia Picanto.”

Police ordered the suspect to stop but instead he ignored the police and sped off.

Police gave chase and the suspect was eventually cornered.

Upon searching the suspect and his vehicle, police found a large number of drugs. The suspect was arrested for possession and dealing in drugs.
