Plant thieves on the prowl

Top JMPD official’s property was tempered with when his rose bushes were stolen on Tuesday night, October 20. About 13 bushes were uprooted.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous says he is upset about the state of the crime in Lenasia. He is aggravated that when he tries his bid to have an environmentally friendly home – some criminals won’t make him realise his initiative.

He explains he woke up in the morning of October 21, to water his rose bushes and the entire garden as he does every morning, and he ‘reckoned’ his garden was tempered with.

He suspects the crime happened after 12.30pm, after his daughter had gone to bed.

“We are being hijacked, murdered, robbed and so many other things are done to us, what we must do now?” he asks.

He said tempering with his property is uncalled for. He mentioned along Protea Avenue, a house was stripped of its outside wall lights some time ago.

However, this is the first time anything has been stolen from his yard. He highlighted the dire need for an area patrol saying the police sector vehicles are not visible enough.

“We are also paying for private security, but they are also not doing their job,” said Rajah. He says he is planning on calling a public meeting regarding security in the area.

The official is not the only community member to have fallen victim to plant theft. A number of homes have also fell victim to the theft with cactus and bonsai plants vanishing overnight.

Two homes in Extension 2’s Honeysuckle Street have been hit, with five bonsai plants, ground plants, as well as containers, going missing.

Four Cypresses, three cactus plants and a fountain motor went missing in Hydrangea, and lilies went missing in Swan Street. All these incidents took place in the month of October.

Abdul of Bonsai Gardens advised community members to refrain from buying plants from vendors as they might be stolen.

“The community needs to stay away from stolen goods as they also incriminate themselves by purchasing stolen goods,” Abdul said.
