On August 13, five heavily armed men broke into Langlaagte Testing Station, on the Main Reef Road after overpowering four security guards who were stationed there.

They used explosive to blast open the safes and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and other items.

Langlaagte SAPS spokesperson, Constable Kraai said, “Five suspects, armed with firearms, overpowered four security guards and tied them up. A firearm was taken from one of the security guards. Three suspects then entered the building and planted the explosives on the safes.”

JMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the stolen items include computers and documents with sensitive information that could be used to commit fraud.
“What we have established is that there are files or documents which can, at face value, be used for registering vehicles. That is actually our biggest worry. However, each file has a number which we control. There is a possibility that we can still sort out the problem,” Minnaar added.
“It has not yet been established how the criminals managed to get past the security guards or how they gained access to the testing station, this will have to be investigated,” he said.
Some of the activities at the testing station were suspended for the day.
