Recently, an elderly man was robbed outside a shop on the corner of Albertina Sisulu Road and Mint Road in Fordsburg.
The incident was captured on CCTV. According to the community, all seven suspects reside in the area and are also believed to be linked to many other incidents. Residents say they are scared to report the suspects to the police because once they are questioned by police, they are released; the suspects do not even spend a day in the police holding cells.
Now businesses in Fordsburg are appealing for assistance. However, they have little faith in the police.

Speaking to the Rising Sun, one of the business owners in the area said she is thinking of closing down because of the high crime rate.
“We are under threat. When one leaves one’s home, one does not even know if one will make it back alive. We all know who the criminals are, but we are helpless. I witnessed the robbery but there was nothing I could have done about it. Some security officers also witnessed the incident but they could not assist the old man. The suspects were armed and dangerous. After robbing the old man the perpetrators did not flee the scene, they just walked around as if nothing had happened”.
She added, “The suspects are notorious for card skimming, smash and grabs and stripping spare wheels off vehicles. We are living in hell here; we have lost business because of crime. I do not know how long I will be able to take this”.
The suspects fled with two cell phones. However, no case has been opened at the police station.
