Johannesburg Central Police arrested two suspects, aged 34 and 37, for business robbery at a store at the Newton Junction Mall on January 17.
The store was identified as Markham.
According to an eyewitness, one suspect entered the store pretending to be a customer. He then pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the cashier; he was then joined by his accomplices.
The staff members at Markham were cuffed with cable ties in the store room for a few minutes while six suspects ransacked the store.
Police hailed one of Markham’s employees who managed to untie herself and press a panic button.
An eyewitness said, “They loaded cell phones and watches in the big bag before they fled the store; one of the employee managed to untie herself and press the panic button.”
She adds, “Realising that the security guards are on their case, they dropped the bag and tried to make a run for it. However, two of them were apprehended. Four managed to escape, but we are sure that the two suspects will lead the police to their accomplices. A bag full of cell phones and watches were recovered.”
The suspects will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
