Police are investigating a case of malicious damage to property after a Standard Bank ATM at the Total garage, at the corner Volta and K43, in Lenasia Extension 10, was bombed.

According to Sergeant Khalipa Mvula (standby communication officer for Soweto West Cluster), at about 1.10am on Sunday a petrol attendant who was inside the cashier’s room heard an explosion.

“The attendant looked through the tinted window and saw an unknown man getting inside a vehicle and driving off,” said Mvula.

The cashier immediately alerted the Lenasia SAPS.

“Upon investigation we established that the Standard Bank Auto Cash ATM was blown up with an explosive. The impact of the blast was not strong enough to open the safe as it was still intact. No cash was taken from the ATM,” added Mvula.

The number of suspects involved in the crime is still unknown. No gun shots were fired at the scene and no injuries were reported.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact them.

Anyone with information can report anonymously by sending a tip-off to the crime line on 32211 or by calling crime stop on 08600-10111.
