A family of four was awoken in their house in Heath Lane, Lenasia South, by a gang of five men on Wednesday, May 11. According to Sergeant Khalipa Mvula, during the early hours of the morning, the suspects removed roof tiles and made their way through the ceiling and into the house. The sleeping couple were awoken by three armed men in their bedroom, demanding a firearm. “The victims then realised there were two more suspects in the living room,” said Sergeant Mvula.
The suspects bound the family with bandages and ransacked the house. The gang took an undisclosed amount of money, jewellery and a laptop before escaping. “No arrests have been made thus far,” added Mvula. Police are appealing to anyone with information concerning the robbery to contact their nearest police station. He cautioned the public not to approach the suspects as they are armed and dangerous.
The Lenasia and Lenasia South community has seen what seems to be a spike in the number of robberies where the same modus operandi had been used; removing roof tiles to gain access to the homes. According to Sheraaz Pelwan (Director of SP Security), beams and motion sensors can be installed in the roof to slow down the perpetrators.
“Nowadays the technology is so advanced that the systems could pinpoint exactly where the perps are in the roof and house,” Pelwan said. “Installing an electric fence in the roof can also assist in slowing them down, however, without any security company securing your house, it will be very difficult keep them out,” said Pelwan.
