AN elderly Lenasia South man, Madhan Valabh, recently came under attack during his visit to the Lenasia CBD.
Mr Valabh told the Rising Sun that he had driven to the Lenasia CBD in search of a wheelchair for his paraplegic wife. Not knowing exactly where the store was, he parked his car at the HRN parking lot and walked to the store using the Lenasia Square route.
“Just as I entered the Karachi Arcade, I was assaulted by four young men, one of them pulled the cellphone bag I had hanging around my neck, and they started assaulting me. They took the cellphone my son had purchased for me in December,” Mr Vallabh said.
During the assault, the victim says people nearby were watching the incident unfold. However, nobody helped him.
“I screamed for help, and nobody came to my aid. Sadly, people don’t help each other anymore. I could have been killed and nobody would have assisted me,” he said.
He also noted that the men hardly said anything while the assault and robbery occurred.
They appeared to be around 20 to 25 years of age. After the attack,a police vehicle passed by the scene. He flagged them down and explained what had just happened.
“The police said they would go in search of the robbers, but they didn’t return,” he said.
Once the assailants had fled in the direction of the Jaamia parking lot, shopkeepers assisted a disorientated Mr Vallabh.
He, however, could only return home hours later, following the ordeal, as his car and house keys were stolen.
“I had to phone my son, whose number I could not remember due to the brutality I had just been through. He managed to bring me the extra car keys. We had to change our locks at home as we do not know what the robbers knew about us,” he said.
Mr Vallabh, who suffers from hypertension, and diabetes and wears a urine bag following his prostate cancer diagnosis, says he had to visit the hospital the following day as he was in pain.
“I am a pensioner. I could not afford expensive doctors and had to travel to Baragwanath Hospital to receive treatment.
Reports suggest that the incident is not isolated, as other people have fallen victim to robberies and assaults within the CBD in the same vicinity as Mr Vallabh, allegedly by the same assailants.
