At around noon on Thursday, October 20, two armed men allegedly entered the Pep Cell at the Trade Route Mall and pointed a firearm at the lone female employee demanding money and the safe key. The men then took cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash from the store and left.

Shahim Ismail of Lethal Forces Security, which services the Trade Route Mall, told the Rising Sun that the thieves had entered the shop pretending to be customers.

“No shots were fired and no injuries were reported,” said Mr Ismail.

An alert guard stationed at the entrance to the mall noticed the suspicious-looking men and approached them. The men then pointed a firearm at the guard. The guard took cover and called for backup, causing the thieves to drop a bag of cellphones while fleeing.

The men are said to have used a silver getaway vehicle and to have sped off in the direction of Lehae.

No arrests have been made at this point.

“The police are investigating a case of business robbery and we appeal to the community to assist us with the information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators,” Seargeat Bafana Ndimande of the Lenasia SAPS SAID.
