Crime at the Lenasia CBD has spiralled out of control. Civilians are helpless, and all they can do is watch while crime is being committed. Sheik Yusuf, Imam of Simunye Masjid is the latest victim of crime. On February 19, he visited Lenasia from Westonaria, and on his way back, he decided to park his car next to the new temporary taxi rank, next to Jaamia Park, to buy fruits. Little did he know that he was on a crime hot spot. On his way back to the car, two men approached him and asked for his car keys, which he refused to give.
The two were joined by another two men, who began assaulting him in full view of passers-by. Sheik Yusuf said, “Four men assaulted me simply because I refused to hand them my car keys. Civilians were scared to come to my rescue because the perpetrators were armed. They overpowered me. I ran to the taxi rank to ask for help, but no one wanted to help. Sometimes one might try to help and lose one’s life in the process, and I think that was the reason why they didn’t help me. The men fled with my car, a black, Hyundai, Tuckson, 2006 model, reg number FY 58 HF GP”. A case has been opened with Lenasia SAPS.
