Niveshlin Yashlin Pillay, 26, at the time, and a close friend Theolan Nair, 29, were shot and killed during an altercation on August 12, 2018, at the Kyalami Downs Shopping Centre. Exactly 2 years to the day, on August 12, 2020, the two who were responsible, namely Lester Lloyd Latchman and Preneshan Govender, were sentenced and convicted to two life sentences each. Niveshlin’s mother, Ms Chrisie Pillay, said, “Niveshlin was my right hand, my pillar and these monsters took it upon themselves to kill him.
Our families wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the state prosecutor, Evelene Moseki, Captain Lamola, Captain Minnaar and Captain Chetty from the Midrand Police Station. I also want to say thank you to Mr Mboni who testified against the suspects. He went beyond the call of duty, putting his life at risk to ensure that justice prevailed.” She added, “Our only consolation as mothers is that these monsters will never make another mother, brother, sister and wife cry again. The last two years have been the worst ever. It is heart-breaking that I will never see, or hear my firstborn again.
Niveshlin’s sister, who relied heavily on her brother, also suffered a great loss. They had lost their dad just 2 years prior. Niveshlin, who looked up to his dad, was hard hit by his death. No mother ever expects to outlive her child, but here we have to seek counselling, which will never help us deal with this ordeal.” “Theo was married for 3 years when his life was cruelly snatched from him, taking away his chance to enjoy his marriage, or even a chance to be a father. Niveshlin and Theolan, were both happy, fun loving individuals. Lester and Preneshan not only took away a son, but also a brother, husband, friend, confidant, the life of any party… The sad reality is that prison has visiting hours, heaven does not. Niveshlin Yashlin Pillay and Theolan Nair are sadly missed,” said Ms Chrisie Pillay.
