A taxi owner from the Lawley Taxi Association was shot and wounded on Friday, December 4.
The incident unfolded in the Lenz CBD near the Lenasia Taxi Rank. According to a store owner near the crime scene, the man was returning from buying cigarettes at the taxi rank when he was shot. It is alleged that three men fired shots at the victim who then fell to the ground.
“I had seen two men near his taxi which was parked across the road from my store,” the store owner said.
“He also had a gun in hand so I’m not sure who fired the three shots we heard,” he said.
It is alleged the two men then fled towards the Gemsbok and Rose Avenue intersection where they were picked up by a red/ maroon Tazz.
Following the shooting, nearby citizens said they attempted to assist the wounded man, who, however, refused to put his gun away. He was rushed to hospital in his taxi.
Two weeks ago a taxi driver from the same association was shot and killed in Lenasia South. In the incident it was alleged the suspects had been travelling in a maroon Tazz.
The association was not available for comment.
The suspects’ vehicle had no registration number.
“We are investigating a case of taxi violence and attempted murder,” said Lenasia SAPS spokesperson Captain Hector Netshivhodza.
No arrests have been made and investigations are underway Netshivhodza added.
