After holding up the 24/7 convenience store in Lenasia South and robbing the owner of an undisclosed amount of money, earlier today, Monday March 25, the three men fled on foot only for one of them to hold up a family a few streets away.
According to SCUD Security Services security personnel, Deon, the men fled towards Cambridge and Greenwhich streets.
“We, together with patrollers followed up on the information that one of the suspects was seen jumping into a yard in Greenwhich Street. We searched each house on the street, but as we were combing through the neighbourhood once more, we noticed that the door to one of the houses we had already passed was now closed. We found it strange because when we passed by the door was wide open,” Deon said.
The team went into the yard and found that the back door had also been closed, however, keys could still be seen in the keyhole from the inside which was evident that there were people in the house.
After knocking on the door, Deon says shots were fired by the suspects hitting one of the patrollers.
“There was an exchange of gunfire. We managed to break down the door and found the suspect lying on the kitchen floor. He was still alive and seemed to be going for his firearm. We disengaged him and police were called,” Deon said.
The suspect was pronounced dead on scene while the CPF patroller was rushed to hospital in a stable condition.
Lenasia SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Khalipha Mvula was also on scene.
“According to information received, the suspect jumped over the wall and found the domestic worker hanging clothes on the washing line. He threatened her with a firearm and instructed her to get back into the house. The suspect then put all the house occupants into one room and bound their hands and feet,” SGT Mvula said.
