On Wednesday, October 3, at around 2 pm, police officers attached to the crime prevention unit were busy conducting their routine stop and search duties in Vlakfontein, when they received a tip-off from a reliable source about the whereabouts of a suspect, who, it was believed, was in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Without hesitation, the police officers followed up on the tip-off and on arrival at the address given to them, found the 44 year-old suspect on the premises. A search of the premises was conducted and the suspect was found to be in possession of five ziplock bags containing crystal meth. The man then led the police to another house where his 46 year-old friend was found to be in possession of the firearm. The firearm was handed to police and the 46 year old was immediately placed under arrest and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“The serial number on the firearm had been filed off and there were no live rounds in the magazine. The recovered firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether it had been used in the commission of any serious and violent crimes,” said Lenasia South SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Khalipha Mvula.

“The acting station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Dungelo, applauds the community members who report criminal activities to the police, and who will be safer now that one firearm has been removed from the hands of the criminals,” Sgt. Mvula said.
