Residents in Lenasia Drive, which is adjacent to the Waterwax Informal Settlement, are encountering electricity problems.
This is due to the illegal connections that have been made by some residents in the local informal settlement. Efforts by community members to stop the illegal connections have failed. They are now frustrated and they don’t know what to do anymore. Some of them are being threatened by those who connect electricity illegally.
Speaking to the Rising Sun, a community member, who asked to remain anonymous, said that they needed urgent intervention. “We are experiencing problems and we don’t know who to speak to anymore. City Power contractors do come and disconnect the illegal connections, but the minute they leave the area, these people come back and reconnect. Community patrollers are trying their level best to prevent them from connecting, but they just don’t give up. The government must install electricity in the informal settlement to solve this problem, or come up with another amicable solution.”
Ward 10 Councillor Joseph Matjila said he will be meeting City Power to discuss the issues of electricity in the area, especially on Lenasia Drive. Matjila said he will propose that the cables be installed underground, something which was also done inNirvana Service Road. Matjila has also informed JMPD about this issue, and they agreed that they will do regular patrols and arrest pepertrators.
If you come across any illegal connections, report them to Eskom on 08600 37566 or SMS Crime Line on 32211.
