A woman was arrested at the Booysens City Power offices after officials found two stolen electricity meters worth R4 000, in her handbag.
According to Johannesburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba, the woman’s electricity supply was disconnected a week prior, during Operation Buya Mthetho, when it was found she had been in arrears.
On the day in question, the women went to the City Power offices to get her electricity reconnected.
“As she was busy negotiating with officials from the City, one of the technicians noticed that she was carrying two meters in her handbag,” Mashaba said.
The serial numbers on the meters, after being checked on the system, were found to have been reported stolen in Lenasia South.
“The City, working with all state enforcement agencies, will not leave any stone unturned in dealing with crime in our jurisdiction. I hope that the residents of Johannesburg will support our initiative and report crime and criminals to our authorities.”
“The Buya Mthetho operation was headed by the City’s Group Forensic Investigation Services, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Department as well as City Power.
I have faith that the GFIS, JMPD and Operation Buya Mthetho will do all they can to ensure law breakers are brought to book,” Cllr Mashaba said.
