Saaberie Chishty Ambulance volunteer and community activist, Sirajudin Mia Sayed, says he is happy to be alive. He was shot after foiling a robbery during the festive season.
The attempted robbery had been in progress in Lenasia South Extension 1’s Heron Street on December 30.
Sayed had just got off duty after volunteering the entire evening with the ambulance service when he received a call from a community member asking for assistance.
Sayed, who is also a CPF patroller and a member of the Lenasia Block Watch responded immediately to the scene.

“A friend of mine called to ask me to assist a friend of his who had an intruder in his yard. My wife and I immediately jumped into my car and headed to the scene,” Sayed said.
Sayed was the first person to arrive on the scene and just as he jumped out of his car, one of the robbers spotted him. The suspect had been in the yard while another had been hiding in a nearby bush.
“The person in the bush fired at me multiple times. I was hit in the upper thigh and fell to the ground,” he said.
According to Sayed, he instructed his wife who had been in the car to run and seek help.
He then crawled to the other side of the road but was approached by one of the suspects. With a gun held to his head, Sayed said he was robbed of all the valuables he had on him.
The suspects then fled the scene in a getaway vehicle which had been parked nearby.
“As soon as they left, my wife, with the help of passers-by she had flagged down, managed to get me into the car and I was taken to Daxina Hospital for medical treatment,” Sayed said.
On arrival at the hospital, he passed out owing to loss of blood.
Police were called to the scene and found a screwdriver which was being used to open the door left in the door hinges. A bag containing tyre straps, bolt cutters and other house-breaking implements was also found.
“I’m thankful to be alive. I might be in pain but I’m really happy to be alive,” Sayed said.
“Aboo Sayed and the rest of the management team at Saaberie Chishty extends their regret to Sirajudin and his family for the unfortunate incident and wishes our champion a speedy recovery,” a Saaberie Chishty media statement read.
