Lehae community members are still trying to come to terms with the killing of a taxi driver, which they term as a ‘barbaric’ act, displayed by some members of taxi associations.
On August 29, a meeting was held at the newly built Lehae Taxi Rank by a few taxi drivers, allegedly to deliberate on which association should control the rank.
It is alleged that argument ensued and members started shooting at each other.
One taxi driver was shot dead during the shootout.

Some of the taxi drivers fled to the nearby houses seeking refuge while the others jumped into their vehicles and sped off.
More than 40 cartridges were found at the scene.

The Lawley Taxi Association and the Ennerdale Taxi Association are fighting for control of the Lehae Taxi Rank.
It is also alleged that a group of armed taxi drivers shot back at law enforcement agencies who were trying to enforce law and order.
“It is believed that the deceased was a member of the Lawley Taxi Association,” Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Kay Makhubele said.
The Gauteng Department of Community Safety has called a meeting to map a way forward to ensure that a similar incident does not occur again.
The South African National Taxi Council chairperson for the greater Johannesburg has also condemned the shooting and pleaded with law enforcement agencies to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.
