Police are now investigating a case of murder, after a new-born baby was found dumped in a bin along Lenasia’s Hydrangea Street on Tuesday, July 24.
Following the gruesome discovery by a waste picker, a 23-year-old woman was arrested. The woman made a brief appearance at the Lenasia Magistrates’ Court.
“Charges were changed from concealment of birth to murder,” said Lenasia SAPS spokesperson, Captain Hector Netshivhodza.
The baby boy who is said to have been full term, was found wrapped in a towel with his umbilical cord still attached.
When the tragedy made the rounds in the Lenasia area, a community member took it upon herself to give the baby a dignified funeral. The funeral was held at the Saaberie Chishty on Wednesday, July 26.
Once again community members condemned the act, saying women should learn to love themselves enough to be able to give love to children.
